Peppermint (Latin: Mentha x piperita) is a perennial, cultivated mint genus medical plant that belongs to the mint family. Peppermint is well known throughout the world since ancient times. It is one of those plants that are distinguished in medicine by a very wide range of use. Peppermint contains an essential oil with many components, thereby, having various positive effects on the body. This plant is often used in the cases of cold and flu; it is good for sore throat as menthol removes itchy feeling, and also is good for treating bronchitis.
Because of the pleasant, refreshing taste, mint is used to treat nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and flatulence, to increase the acid content of the stomach, hiccups, also as a stimulating appetizer. Peppermint promotes bile secretion. It can also be used as a mild diuretic. It is known that peppermint activates and strengthens the human brain and stimulates mental ability. It is used to treat headaches, insomnia, to improve the blood circulation (as it enlarges the capillaries). Peppermint has a calming, spasmolytic, antiseptic and analgesic effect.
Peppermint is used externally as an antiseptic in bathing, gargling throat, and inhalations.
It is believed that the mint has antitumor activity.


Do not use peppermint in cases of severely reduced arterial blood pressure! Peppermint should not be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding! Not recommended for children under the age of 12!
